First Reds Game

On Sunday, April 20, we went down to Great American Ballpark with some friends from Fairfield to see the Reds play Milwaukee. We got our tickets at half price because it was Miami University day, so we had great seats right at third base in the ~20th row.

It kept trying to drizzle, and the game was still tied at 1 in the seventh when the mommies and kids headed home, leaving the dads to tough it out in the rain.

We were rewarded with a dramatic finish. Consecutive flubs (I guess only 1 was counted an error) directly in front of us by 3rd baseman Encarnacion in the top of the 10th let Milwaukee load the bases and then go up by 2. He was first up to bat in the bottom of the 10th and redeemed himself by whacking a solo dinger, followed by another solo dinger by Bako to knot the score at 3 all. Milwaukee changed pitchers but it didn't help much. The Reds got a man on first and sent in Freel as a pinch runner. Then they got another on base with Freel at second, bringing up Junior. He foul-tipped one ball that came pretty close to us, but a large man secured the ball pretty convincingly so we did not make an attempt on it. Soon, Griffey whacked the game-winning walk-off RBI that almost became HR # 597 (it temporarily fooled the person controlling the Griffey Home Run counter in the outfield) but actually just hit the top of the wall and stayed in play. There was no chance the Brewers could catch Freel, though.
